Controlling scent

Controlling your scent is one of the most vital things when it comes to hunting deer. They have a keen sense of hearing and if your not careful they can smell you before you get into the woods. Your scent is more important than your camouflage. Not to say that is not important, but their scent can track you down before you even get started. There are a few things you can do with what you wear to control your scent better. Also theirs something you can do the day before you go hunting.

When buying hunting clothes some of them will have a scent control on them. You do not have to get these, but they can a bit more helpful. You can still use products to help cover your scent on your hunting clothes regardless.

Products

This may sound funny to some non hunters, but using scentless bathroom products is very important. You don't need to use these year around of course. However, when the hunting season comes you should invest in some hunting deodorant. Using products such as axe and old spice is not good when your in the deer hunting season. Deer are not familiar with these smells and will associate them with danger. These deodorants will help prevent that strong smell from other deodorants. Before the hunting season starts begin to use them. This is just to play it on the safe side. Also do not wear clothes that may have been sprayed by deodorant in the past. I am talking about t-shirts and such. This may leave that smell on them for a while. Always separate your hunting clothes from your casual wear.

Scent a-way is one of the most popular brands. They every type of bathroom product you'll need. Even toothpaste! Yes this may be getting far fetched, but if you don't want that strong scent from other products then you can use hunting toothpaste. I personally did not use this, but its a good idea. You will only be using them during the hunting seasons so not a lot will need to be bought. Hunting shampoo and the hunting spray that goes on your clothes is the most important.

Now your clothes are very important to keep scented. There are a couple different scent types out there. Some will cover your scent up and others will eliminate it. Before you go out spray down your hunting pants, jacket, below your boots, and all around your body. Sometimes the spray does not always come out right and you may want to angle the bottle a bit. You might want to get someone to spray down your back as this area is harder to get to yourself.

Even with all these products there's still something you should do to eliminate the variable of a deer smelling you. Once a deer smells you its over. Try and keep a place in your house to keep your hunting clothes separate from casual wear . For example, keep them separate from your your casual wear then put them in a container outside when hunting season gets close. You will get the scent of the outside air in the hunting clothes. This is just another thing you can do to help eliminate the possibility of having scent on you.

Wind,showers, and laundry

No matter how much you think your scent is covered check the wind. Your scent will never be eliminated 100%. We basically stink to deer. They affiliate the smell with dangerous and will run the other way.  Always check the direction of the wind depending on where you think the deer will be coming from. If you have done scouting then you may be aware of a general direction they are coming from. You can check the wind by looking at various weeds blowing in certain directions or branches.Another method is to wet your finger and point it out. This is somewhat difficult to do, but some swear by this method.

When you wash your hunting clothes use scentless detergent because it will eliminate that unknown smell if you used scented ones. Keep your hunting clothes as scentless as possible to human smells. Another thing you should do before heading out is to take a shower. This will help take any smells you may have gathered from the day. Do this right before you go deer hunting. This is not necessary, but may help if you had your casual clothes on.

Deer have an amazing ability to smell. Its their number on way to detect possible danger. Keep yourself as scentless as possible and always watch the direction of the wind. Being prepared is half the battle when it comes to deer hunting.
