Crate GX15 Amp Review

GX-15 AMP
The Crate GX-15 is designed to be a practice amp for home and studio. Its lightweight and very portable and is relatively loud for its size. This is an amp for any beginners and maybe advanced players just to practice on it. Mainly for beginners though. I have used this amp for a while and have to say its decent, but is not all that great. Its fine for someone practicing or carrying places, but it is not the best quality sound
Features:
-It is an 8 inch speaker 15 watt amp
-Two Channels
-It has a head phone jack and an external speaker jack
-It weighs approximately 15 lbs which is quite light
-Has low-mid-high switches
-Its overdrive has a level and gain knobs
-Clean Level switch
First off I have to say the clean channel is pretty decent. Its not to bad and will sound pretty good with most guitars. Its not the best clean channel ever, but for an amp this size it does the job. Now the distortion on this amp plainly just sucks. It is very buzzy and muddy. Its not that great of quality. When you play notes and chords it just makes a buzzing sound. It may be okay for some practice, but its really not that good of quality. This will be okay for beginners, but even then its not really that great. The clean channel is much better.
The best thing to do with this amp is get a distortion pedal and use it with this amp. It will sound dramatically better than the built in distortion. This amp simply sounds to muddy and when you do power cords, bars, and other various things it just does not have much quality at all. I use a really good guitar pedal with it and it sound good. This is pedal that will sound much better using distortion pedals. The clean channel is like I said not to bad though.
If you intend to buy this amp you may want to invest in a good distortion pedal. It should have significantly less buzzing and muddy sounds. Advanced players should avoid this as the overdrive sucks. They could use a distortion pedal, but if your a serious player then this amp is not for you.
-RECOMMENDED FOR BEGINNERS AND BEST USE WITH DISTORTION PEDAL-
If you just bought a guitar and are looking for a cheap inexpensive amp then this will be okay, but you should definitely buy a distortion pedal. The amp itself is loud enough for small and medium rooms. Its not good to practice with band or anything. When it comes to practice it should be fine if used with a good distorted pedal.
OVERDRIVE - 6.0
FEATURES - 7.0
RELIABILITY - 6.8
IMPRESSIONS - 6.5
IF USED WITH A DISTORTION PEDAL!
SOUND QUALITY 7.5-7.9
USE DISTORTION PEDASL NOT BUILT IN SOUND
When it comes down to it this is just a mediocre amp. (A mediocre practice amp) Its clean sound is average and the overdrive is terrible. I am sure some new players may like the overdrive sound, but they will most likely want something better. If you want to get this use a distortion pedal and you will be much happier. I use a George lynch signature pedal and it sounds very good. Mainly because my pedal has a lot of options that this amp does not have such as delay,re-verb, and offers better distorted sound. Get like a boss pedal and this amp will serve as a decent amp.

They are okay for what they are. Most small solid state practice amps will get a servicable clean tone. The 8 inch speaker doesn't have the same frequency response as full sized 12 inch speakers, it will give less low end and will have a higher roll-off. This means that the distortion tone is always going to be rather harsh, even if you use a pedal.
